Honda Cars: Security flaw allow hackers to unlock and start cars remotely

Security researchers discovered that many Honda cars are vulnerable to remote unlocking and remotely starting.

Despite being rare, there are some security flaws that can be exploited today by malicious hackers. Hacking experts do occasionally notice some of these vulnerabilities. A 19-year old cybersecurity specialist was able to drive 25 Tesla cars using a security vulnerability.

Honda cars are at risk today. A team of security experts found that several Honda cars have a very fragile rolling code mechanism. This security flaw could enable hackers to remotely unlock or start cars. Researchers claim that they have tested the attack against Honda models between 2021-2022. This includes the following models:

2012 Honda Civic
Honda X-RV 2018
2020 Honda C-RV
Honda Accord 2020
Honda Odyssey 2020
Honda Inspire 2021
2022 Honda Fit
Honda Civic 2022
2022 Honda VE-1
2022 Honda Breeze

RollingPWN is the vulnerability that causes this vulnerability. It’s part of Honda’s keyless entry system. The current Honda keyless entry system is based on a rolling-code model, which creates a new access number every time the user presses fob. To prevent attacks, it is necessary to remove all precedents once they have been enacted. Honda owners are unfortunate to learn that safety experts found that old codes can be cancelled and reused for access to the vehicle.

Security experts discovered the flaw and believe that it can be applied to all Honda vehicles. Honda is not expected to quickly solve the problem. Honda is currently conducting an investigation. Honda could resolve the vulnerability by installing an over-the air firmware update. However, many of the affected vehicles do not provide this kind of support.
