PCI-SIG’s database mentions a new SSD drive, the Samsung 990 PRO. It is listed as supporting PCIe 5.x4. This confirms the product’s name and that the consumer version will be equipped with an M.2 interface. However, the actual length of the drive is not known.
Samsung previously launched the first PCIe Gen5PM1743 SSDs. These SSDs are OEM. There are also Enterprise-class solutions available. The new Gen5 drives offer almost a twofold speed increase compared to Gen4, but they will get very hot. Some vendors have come up with solutions.
Intel Alder Lake processor motherboards will support Gen5 drives and X670/B650 solutions for AMD AM5. This will depend on which board class.
Samsung 990 PRO’s price and release date have not been revealed.
